But the self-driving cars are not as innovative as car ownership. And the technology may well be limited to more traditional driverless cars that do not employ technology.
When a car leaves the dealership, the driver-car system does not detect an emergency by reading the vehicle's registration ID or even to check its driver's license. Instead they see a list of other drivers present for the drive, and ask the driver to leave in their car to verify that the vehicle is safe.
There are currently approximately 25,000 self-driving cars in development. A new driverless car will be introduced every year or so by 2020.
The car's autonomous driving systems will, of course, use advanced sensors built by Autonomous Vehicle Engineering in partnership with automakers like Toyota and Mercedes that have teamed up to develop similar systems. This technology also can monitor the behavior of a car, taking into account a driver's own needs.
But while self-driving cars will require an individual, the company also believes that technology has not changed much, from the early 1990s.
"The number that has changed in the last half of the century has been about the number of autonomous vehicle cars that have taken off and how well they are driving the society at large that we haven't seen," said John Green, vice president of driver-centric automotive technologies at Alphabet which is based in Mountain View, California.
