NASA and Space Technology and Flight Sciences Consortium (START), the company that developed this sensor, is looking forward to making its next-generation solar array even more advanced. It says that in the next five years, the company will launch 50 of the company's prototype solar cells from three countries that would be developed through START, and will release 20 new cells per year from 2021 to 2040.
In 2011, NASA put SolarPulse Technologies, then based at Bose, in touch with NASA to develop the first-ever solar array. The company plans to launch at least 50 solar arrays in 2012, which would add at least 40 percent to the total at about 1.3 billion miles in radius. SolarPulse expects to have two solar arrays for use with NASA at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
For the technology to work as expected, START's goal was to make the system more powerful than the power plants for the U.S.-led Space Launch System. The U.S. Army planned to use about 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of wind capacity for their two-seater satellites at launch.
By 2017, START expects solar cells to provide about 1.5 GW of total capacity, or about 14 percent of the power needed by the space space craft as it descends from
