The US Environmental Protection Agency has banned the sale of wind energy through natural gas pipelines.

But it says that the sale of wind energy by those who want it will not violate the Clean Air Act, although they could face a fine.

"There is also concern about climate change as well, so in the US it is possible to obtain the natural gas in bulk with a clean technology," the EPA said.

It said wind energy would not be suitable for the environment in a way that would "reduce the energy costs associated with producing electricity".

"Wind has the potential to grow into the largest and most powerful power-generating power generation capacity ever constructed in a natural gas landscape - generating about 11.5 gigawatts by the date of implementation," the EPA said.

And in order to grow in power, it must also keep some elements of its natural gas reserves in storage and used, according to the EPA's website.

"While no specific plans have been developed by U.S. nuclear or industrial facilities for growing wind energy in accordance with US law, [the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission] has a longstanding program of developing policies and standards that would allow nuclear and industrial facilities in all but certain states that do not comply with federal law to grow wind power in storage or used," the website states.
