"We have shown that this quantum singularity cannot be predicted using any predictions from the past, as seen in an algorithm for quantum evolution, or from the future," said Robert Van Gogh, a physicist and a senior research scientist in quantum computing at Princeton University.

"This finding is important in the exploration of the field in which quantum mechanics is based," Van Gogh said. "Quantum physics in general would be incomplete without it because the existence of a new single-photon particle is much easier for researchers to find, because they would be able to detect it in a faster time than with the old model."

Osculation

In this study, researchers used a simple algorithm developed by physicists at IBM's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and in the lab of two new IBM researchers. In some instances, the quantum qubits were activated by some form of computation, which involves performing new calculations.

Once activated, the quantum qubits were linked to a computer that created new qubits, allowing the researchers to work backwards into the past to predict the quantum state of a new quantum point.

"In the simulation, the quantum state of a point changes over the course of a few second after activation," Van Gogh wrote in its paper.
