The project, which was completed in late September, has more than 150 prototype parts and will cost up to 1.5 times its cost of conventional research in the UK.

Travis Dijkstra of Bristol Robotics has been working for nearly 2 years to develop the project, which is in its first full-scale prototype stage.

He says that "very complex work is required to support the latest knowledge in artificial intelligence," and such an ambitious programme takes a team in London.

"There are certainly some potential projects in the pipeline, with a very good chance for success," he says.

"There's certainly a lot of innovation in the field of computing, which are being explored by universities all over the world."

Dijkstra says he is not aware of any government agencies having launched a project like this before. "It sounds like a lot of effort, but this is a very innovative idea," he says.

The university is also hoping to get its team of eight engineers working on a system to help develop a wearable tech that will be linked to its computer and smart phone. It is already collaborating with scientists at Google's wearable computing lab in Cambridge and Stanford University in Stanford, to understand whether it will be able to change the way people use their smartphones or wearables
