A team led by Prof. Chiang Wang (Ph.D.) of the University of Hong Kong, said they had discovered a small and unique enzyme in an isolated mammalian brain derived from the basal ganglia-sensory pathway, the endoplasmic reticulum, that inhibits the transport of dopamine from the brain to the outside world via an in-flow pathway.

"This brain-derived endoplasmic reticulum enzyme binds to a single cannabinoid receptor, allowing it to function as a potent inhibitor of dopamine release," he said. "This is significant in understanding how specific neuronal circuitry can be controlled by cannabis, and we have identified another important enzyme in the cell, called the GABA 1 receptor."

Professor Zhang, co-author of the paper with Prof. Huang, said the discovery had important implications for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of cannabis.

"Although the discovery of a unique receptor in the brain is an important scientific question, it is difficult to speculate on how the brain works because it is known that a specific molecule, a receptor, interacts with the brain's endoplasmic reticulum to inhibit cannabinoid receptors in mammals and humans. Moreover, the presence of a unique receptor may have an important effect on the brain's processing of information," he explained.

The discovery will open up new possibilities in the role of cannabinoids in brain development, and with this important discovery,
